Ten Time World Series of Poker Winner Doyle Brunson PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 November 2007
Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson, from Fisher County, Texas, has been playing professional poker for over 50 years.  In his early years, Brunson lived in the small town of Longworth with his parents and two younger siblings.  Brunson played on the All-State Texas Basketball team, was offered scholarships to various universities for both basketball and track, but he chose to attend Hardin-Simmons University because it was close to his home.  The Minneapolis Lakers were interested in Brunson, but a knee injury during a summer job unloading sheetrock put an end to his professional basketball dreams.

Though Brunson had played poker before his knee injury, he began playing seriously after the accident, and his poker winnings paid for his medical expenses.  After receiving a bachelor’s in ’54 and his Masters the year after, he took a job as a business machine salesman, but on his very first day, was invited to play in a seven-card stud game and earned more than a months salary in three hours.  Soon he left the company to become a professional poker player.

Now, 50 some years later, Brunson has won a World Poker Tour title and is one of only three players to win ten World Series of Poker bracelets, joining Johnny Chan and Phil Hellmuth in a tie.  Brunson is one of only four players to ever win back-to-back Main events, a feat which he completed in 1977.  Brunson has also authored four books on poker playing, and in 2005 attempted, potentially illegally, to buy out the World Poker Tour.
