Understanding Poker Hand Ratings

by Alexander Banks on Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Poker hands have a certain ranking regardless of the version of poker being played.  All poker hands are comprised of five cards, even when more cards are in play.  When more than five cards are in play, players make their hands out of the best five cards.  The best poker hand that can be made, assuming there is no wild card in play, is a royal flush.  This is comprised of the A, K, Q, J, and 10 of the same suit. The next highest poker hand is a straight flush, which is comprised of any five cards in sequential order of the same suit.  Here, an A can also be used as a 1, followed by 2, 3, 4, and 5. Four of a kind is the next highest ranking of all the poker hands, followed by a Full House, which is comprised of three of a kind and a pair.  Next, comes the flush.  This is comprised of any five cards of the same suit; however there is no sequential order.  A straight is next, which is any five cards in sequential order, however, not of the same suit as with the straight flush.

The seventh highest ranking of all the poker hands is three of a kind, followed by two separate pairs.  A single pair ranks next and of all ten poker hands, high card falls at the bottom of the list.  That is, if no player has even a pair, the pot would go to the player with the single highest card in his or her hand.  Rankings for poker hands are the same whether you are playing online, a live game, or video poker.
