by Thomas Jensen on Sunday, July 8th, 2007

Johnny Chan eliminated from WSOP, Phil Hellmuth All Time leader nowJohnny Chan was eliminated on Day 1b of the WSOP making nemesis Phil Hellmuth the poker player with the most bracelets in World Series of Poker. Doyle Brunson was eliminated earlier in Day 1a insuring that Hellmuth's 11 bracelets could not be matched this year.

Johnny Chan was eliminated by trip tens. The player that knocked him out will have a memory to tell his poker buddies back home. Sportsbook.com had made Johnny Chan +150 odds to become the 2007 WSOP Champion.  Johnny Chan, also commonly referred to by the nickname Oriental Express, was born in China in 1957. In the early 60’s, his family moved from China to Arizona, and settled in Phoenix.

In the early 70’s the Chan family relocated to Texas and established several restaurants. Johnny Chan went to college to study the restaurant business, but decided to become a professional poker player instead and moved to Las Vegas when he was of age. The decision was monumental as Johnny Chan has proven his worthiness at many poker tables.

Johnny has won a number of World Series of Poker tournaments, he has had over 33 money finishes, has earned himself ten World Series of Poker bracelets, and won the tournament consecutively in ‘87 and in ‘88. His winning streak broke in ’89 when he came in second place at the World Series of Poker Tournament. In fact, Johnny Chan has won more that 5,700,000 million dollars in winnings.

Chan relies on his “lucky” orange to give him luck while at the poker tables. A former smoker, the smell of the orange helps Johnny Chan make it through a game in smoke tournament rooms. Johnny Chan has a total of six children and leads a very busy life – he has established his own restaurant and he writes about poker in his free time. Chan has written for the Trader Monthly, Card Player Magazine, and has co-authored a book with Mark Karowe entitled Play Poker Like Johnny Chan.
