It looks like Slick Willy's racial attack backfired as Illinois Senator Barack Obama won the South Carolina Primary by a landslide with 55% of the vote. This is no “fairy tale” or “illusion” to use Bill Clinton’s own words. The results clearly indicate that South Carolina Primary voters did not appreciate the divisive tone coming from the former President and his wife’s Presidential Campaign suffered for it as the African American voters came out in support to Barack Obama. Sportsbook.com had Barack Obama listed as the 1 to 6 favorite to win the South Carolina Primary.
“Thank you South Carolina,” stated Barack Obama at his victory speech in Columbia to a large audience of supporters chanting “Yes We Can”.
“Two weeks ago we saw the people in Iowa that said the time for change has come.” Referring to his dominating win that proves that the win in Iowa was not a fluke, Barack Obama stated, “The cynics were told a different story by the great people of South Carolina....I did not see a white South Carolina. I did not see a black South Carolina. I saw a South Carolina.”
In a MSNBC exit poll stated that 55% of South Carolina Democratic voters believe Obama can unite the country compared to 26% for Hillary Clinton. The Clinton campaign was only able to secure 17% of the South Carolina African American vote with John Edwards getting 2%. Obama did well in the South Carolina Primary with college educated white voters under the age of thirty. The charismatic Senator has been able to transcend gender, age and race as his “change” message resonates with voters.
In another blow tonight to the Hillary Clinton campaign, Caroline Kennedy will endorse Barack Obama as the Democratic Party’s 2008 Presidential Candidate. "Finally I can vote for a Presidential Candidate like my father," stated Kennedy.
Despite the loss in the South Carolina Primary tonight, Sportsbook.com still has Hillary Clinton as the 6 to 5 odds to become the next President of the United States. You would never guess his wife was in the lead nationally with the way President Bill Clinton keeps bashing Obama’s youth and inexperience. The funny part about this strategy to label Obama as youthful and inexperienced is that Barack is older now than when Bill Clinton ran for President in 1992.
"He won fair and square," stated Bill Clinton about Obama’s win in South Carolina from a campaign stop in Missouri for his wife Hillary Clinton. "Now we move on to where millions of people get a chance to vote."
John Edwards won the South Carolina Primary for the Democratic Party back in 2004 but he was not so fortunate in 2008. The native son of South Carolina benefited from the Hillary Clinton backlash, taking white voters away from the New York Senator. Edwards finished third in the South Carolina Primary with 18% of the vote.
One of our readers S. Aaronson sounded off about my article The Clinton Two Headed Monster attacks Obama:
"It boggles my mind that Stu Norman's article sets up Edwards as the "white racist" candidate. If anyone would compare his proposals with that of Clintons or Obamas, it would be glaringly apparent that Edwards cares more for the poor and working class --who unfortunately are disportionately non-white. When is the media going to stop being a handmaiden to the status quo and start showing some objectivity. Are all the reporters so invested in their own comfortable survival that they will forsake objectivity at the expense of the people who are truly suffering in America--John Edwards is the only candidate left who is truly interested in making our country one that we can all be proud of---oh yeah, did I forget to mention that he is the only candidate who stongly voiced opposition to immunity to Bush's little spies in the telecom industry---gosh, Clinton and Obama didn't even show up to vote against the travesty against our civil rights. Guess the "press" has a very selective view of the First, Fourth and Fifth amendment."
Dear Ms. Aaronson – Thanks for your opinion, which I respect and value but I was not trying to secretly label John Edwards as the “white racist”. Sorry to burst your bubble and sorry your candidate came in third for the South Carolina Primary.
