Illinois Senator Barack Obama announced he raised a record $24.8 million in the first quarter of 2007 for his presidential primary campaign in the first quarter of 2007 topping Hillary Clinton’s $19.1 million. Both campaigns filed reports with the Federal Election Commission on Sunday.
Obama collected $25.7 million from 104,000 donors, Clinton's $26.1 million from 60,000 donors and former vice presidential nominee John Edwards raised $14 million dollars. Sportbet.com has Barack Obama at +600 to become the President of the United States in 2008.
Barack even beat out Republican money leader and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s $21 million record. The Democratic candidates for president racked up up approximately $79 million in contributions in the first three months of 2007, compared with about $54 million for the Republicans.
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has reported raising nearly $21 million during the first quarter of the year, followed by Giuliani with $14.8 million and McCain with $12.5 million. The top six presidential fundraisers so far have raised about $127 million, or four times more than was raised for the same period in 2003.
