Republican representative Mark Foley of Florida resigned suddenly, a week ago, after scandalous messages were revealed targeting Foley as the sender. Foley was seeking re-election at the time of his resignation after already representing the West Palm Beach district for over 12 years. The messages were discovered to have been sent to a teenage congressional page. Foley maintains the fact that he never had any contact with the teenage boy that he solicited messages to. He does however accept full responsibility for the messages and obviously regrets making the decision to send them. Foley does claim that as a child he was molested by a clergyman at his church but in no way blames his experience for what occurred recently.
Foley did check himself into mental health and alcohol rehab a few days ago and is partially blaming his alcohol problem for his actions. He is claiming that at the time he sent the emails and instant messages he was under the influence of alcohol. It was also announced for the first time publicly that Foley is “gay”. He is relieved that this is finally out in the open and he does not have to hide the truth any longer. Many believe now that this revelation will only hurt the situation in the end.
Bet on it at Bodog!
It was also found during all of the turmoil surrounding Foley that House Speaker Dennis Hastert knew about the emails since earlier this year. This contradicts the speaker’s assertion that he only found out about them last week. Hastert has not disputed the claim and his office also confirmed that some of Hastert’s top aides knew last year that Foley had been ordered to cease contact with the 16 year old boy and to treat all pages respectfully.
Because of the recent information surrounding Hastert, many have questioned whether or not he should resign as well. Considering he knew about the situation all along with several people from his office, he needs to step down with his tail between his legs for not taking action sooner. This recent scandal has come about with only days until the next office election. They should be ashamed of the fact that they are in a position of representing our country because this is not who I would prefer be standing for me.
Bet on it at Bodog: Will House Speaker Dennis Hastert resign from his position by October 31st, 2006?
Yes: +370
No: -640
