Katherine Harris gaining ground on Bill Nelson in Florida Senate RaceIn the Florida Senate, race Republican Congresswoman Katherine Harris is continuing to build momentum. She is behind her opponent, Bill Nelson, in the polls by a small margin and closing the gap quickly.   Her main campaign message is pro-growth, pro-family.  She has commented, “I appreciate the strong support of a majority of voters who are disillusioned with Bill Nelson’s lack of leadership and his record of voting against Florida’s best interests. I will fight for Florida in the United States Senate.”

Her main focus seems to be cutting taxes, eliminating wasteful spending, protecting the institution, and opposing amnesty for illegal citizens.  She is the only candidate for the Senate in Florida with a demonstrated record of leadership who will fight for Florida.  Harris rose to national prominence in the controversy of the 2000 presidential election when, as Florida Secretary of State, she helped deliver the state’s 27 electoral votes to Bush and helped seal Bush’s victory.  She is now a two-term Congresswoman.

She has had her share of problems throughout her campaign.  She has been continually criticized with ethical questions surrounding her dealings with a defense contractor and has had enormous trouble maintaining a staff.  She is now on her fourth campaign manager.  She has had issues raising money and maintaining the support of the Republican Party.

Bill Nelson is currently the Senator of Florida and has been since 2000.  He has been a vocal opponent of oil drilling off  Florida’s coast.   He has fought for benefits and health care for veterans and their spouses.  He has also fought for a Medicare prescription drug benefit that allows the government to negotiate for lower drug prices from pharmaceutical companies.

Although both candidates claim a religious relationship to the Christian faith, Harris has criticized Nelson for supporting policies that are “completely contrary to what we believe”.  She did not clarify specific policies but did address the fact the Nelson supports abortion rights and for opposing a proposed constitutional amendment that would have outlawed gay marriage.

Some think Harris’ attacks are not creditable and believe the people will decide who is best based on the facts and that is that Nelson has the record to prove he has done right for Florida.
