Orrin Hatch has the odds in his favor to get re-elected as the Senator from UtahOrrin Hatch has been serving as the Senator from Utah since 1977.  He has an impressive history and is going to be very tough to overtake in the upcoming elections.

Hatch is extremely religious, attended Bingham Young University and even writes and sings Christian music.  He has made over $65,000 as a Christian music recording artist.  He became a lawyer in 1962 and for 14 years after graduating he worked as an attorney at law in Pennsylvania and in Utah.  He has an extremely close relationship with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the dismay of Schwarzenegger’s wife and family.

Hatch has made his presence known through the advocacy of conservative causes.  He has also pushed to allow copyright holders to be able to destroy computers and other technological devises used by hackers.  He disagreed to go on a 26 city debate with his opponent staying that he didn’t need to fight his cause in that “extreme”.  Hatch did agree to a debate at a local college however when asked to be interview afterwards for the local college radio show he refused.

Bodog posts odds on who will win the November 7th, 2006 senate election for the state of Utah: Pete Ashdown (DEM), Orrin Hatch (REP) or Field (Any Other Candidate)?

Pete Ashdown (DEM): 11/1

Orrin Hatch (REP): 1/19

Field (Any Other Candidate): 45/1

Hatch’s opponent Pete Ashdown is hoping all this negative publicity surrounding Hatch will help to give him the title as Senator of Utah.  Ashdown knows he has a tough road ahead of him but is willing to do what it takes to remove Hatch from the Senate seat.  Ashdown is trying to draw attention to the fact that Hatch endorses entertainment industry backed bills that would, without understatement, create the equivalent of a copyright police state.  Hatch has terrorized techies by sponsoring the much loathed DMCA.  He is also a co-sponsor of the Induce Act, which is a bill that aimed to hold tech companies responsible for creating devices that could be used to pirate digital content.

Ashdown on the other hand has great tech credentials.  He founded the first independent ISP in Utah, used to DJ raves, and uses a collaborative “wiki” for his campaign.  He is using the input from his open forum to put together his official policy.  He is truly listening to the people.  He also has a Myspace page!

While many believe that Orrin Hatch will win his sixth term hands down, Ashdown is opening the citizen’s eyes to a different perspective of how to achieve a better Utah.
