For the first time in 12 years Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy debated against a political campaign opponent, Republican Kenneth Chase.
The main issue of the debate was the fact that Ted Kennedy wants to pass the Amnesty Bill that rewards illegal residents with a fast track to citizenship. Chase argued that this will victimize the good people that are waiting in line at our consulates and embassies with their documents in hand for hours and hours ready to apply legally—for a visa to come to our country. The only sin of these potential immigrants or visitors is that their country does not share a contiguous border with the United States. This would be the meanest form of discrimination, punishing the innocent for a circumstance beyond their control.
Chase also criticized Kennedy for trying to buy off the Hispanic race for votes. No one person of our society should be bought off with massive favors. That is the political way, not the honorable way. Hispanics should be a part of our society not because their opinions and votes were bought by a government official but because they are challenged and forced to contribute and sacrifice like every other citizen of this country. In 44 years in office Chase condemned Kennedy for doing nothing to liberate us from Middle Eastern oil which led us directly into the first gulf war and the current war on terrorism. He helped lead the war on poverty by spending 10 trillion dollars leading the war….and losing the war.

Kennedy is the younger brother of former President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, both of whom were assassinated. The one huge positive factor for Kennedy’s campaign, he has been the Senior Senator for Massachusetts since 1962. He is considered one of the most prominent, recognizable, and influential figures in the Democratic Party. In April 2006, he was selected by Time as one of “America’s 10 Best Senators”. He played a major role in the bipartisan team that wrote the controversial No Child Left Behind Act in 2001, which according to Kennedy and Bush, was a compromise. He then worked to get it passed in a Republican controlled Congress, despite the opposition of members from both parties.
Regardless of the negative issues surrounding Kennedy’s campaign, the fact that he has served Massachusetts for so long may just seal his win. People argue that his name is the only reason he initially got into office and why he has stayed there for so long. Someone else deserves the opportunity to make the changes he is not.
