Tennessee Senate Race too close to call between Harold Ford Jr. and Bob CorkerRepublican Bill Frist currently holds the seat in Tennessee however is planning on retire at the end of his term.  The Republican Party nominated Bob Corker while the Democratic nominee is Harold Ford, Jr.  The polls indicate that the race between Corker and Ford is one of the most competitive Senate races of 2006.  Since 1994, the Republican Party has held both of the state’s Senate seats.

Ford is vying to become the first African American Senator popularly elected in the South.  He has had to address accusations made against him by his opponent regarding the fact that he is a “churchgoer by day and a playboy by night”.  He has denied ever being at the Playboy mansion or involved inactivates associated with Playboy.  Ford, a bachelor, has basically served in Congress since he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School.  He has framed himself in the campaign as a “different kind of Democrat” who voted for the war in Iraq but now favors a change in course.  He also frequently invokes God on the trail and even filmed a campaign ad from inside a church.

Corker is the former Mayor of Chattanooga and a multi-millionaire who made his money in real estate.  While Mayor he oversaw a $120 million renovation project, including expansion of the Hunter Museum, renovation of the Creative Discovery Museum, an expansion of Chattanooga’s River Walk, and the addition of a new salt water building to the Tennessee Aquarium.  He has positioned himself as conservative on most social and economic issues.

Some controversy surrounding Corker is that in 2003, his real estate company sold protected wetlands to Wal-Mart for $4.6 million while he was Mayor.  He has also been dogged for thwarting efforts to improve the 911 emergency system.  Unanswered 911 calls rose from 8.8% to 16.9% while he was in office.  Also it was reported that while he was mayor and while he was state finance commissioner, official records are missing.  The records include both letter and emails sent to and sent by Corker during his time in each office.  Nobody knows what they contained to understand why they are missing.

Corker and Ford have one tough race to overtake.  There have been some conflicting poll calculations on who is actually ahead which is why this race is so competitive.  Neither of them have enough credibility it seems to really pull ahead of the other however, I would have to side with Ford considering there is less negativity surrounding his campaign.  Political experts believe that the Democrats need to win Tennessee in order to take control of the Senate.
