Jeff Gordon almost secured his fifth Sprint Cup title last season, but it was not to be as the veteran driver finished 179 
points behind teammate and protege Jimmie Johnson. While third place is not first, Gordon had to be pleased with a year that saw him place inside the top five 16 times, including a win at the Samsung 500 in Texas.
Gordon is no stranger to success at Daytona either, having won at the track six times in 34 starts while also recording 11 top five finishes there. In 17 Daytona 500 runs, Gordon has three wins and eight top 10 performances. Last season the Califronia native led 14 laps at the 500 but ended the race in 13th after a second place start.
Gordon, who has 82 wins in 581 career Cup races, knows that time is no longer on his side when it comes to opportunities at the legendary superspeedway. He indicated his team works a just a little bit harder at the facility given its stature and historical significance.
"You analyze every lap more here than you do any other race because there's so much riding on the line," said Gordon, who will starts tomorrow's race in the 21 position. "If you win one race all year, this is the one you want to win.
The Daytona 500 is scheduled to start at 1:00pm ET, February 14th on FOX.
