The 34 year old is presently listed as the favorite to win today's big race at 5 to 1 odds in Sportsbook.com's Jimmie Johnson Odds to win 2010 Daytona 500.
Jimmie Johnson got off to a modest start last season while shooting for his fourth Sprint Series championship as he
averaged a 14.9 finish through the first 10 races. Not bad at all, but Johnson set a blistering pace through the season's final 10 outings, winning four times while averaging a 6.8 finish. On the year, the California native recorded seven wins, 16 top fives, and 24 top 10s in 36 starts for a grand total of 6652 points.
Johnson did not have a typical finish at Daytona last year, placing 31st after a seventh place start in the rain shortened affair. Even with that less than desirous result, he has produced an average finish of 15.8 at "The Great American Race", with one win (2006) and two top fives. Johnson has fared even better in 16 career outings at the track, garnering six top fives and nine top 10s in route to a 14.2 average finish.
Johnson, who will begin this afternoon's race from the three position, just behind teammates Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr., is more known for his dominance of intermediate tracks (36 of his 47 career wins have come on such tracks); however, he does have two wins and 10 top fives in 32 superspeedway starts.
