Dale Earnhardt Jr. looked to have a decent Daytona finish in hand last weekend, but he was able to manufacture a great 
conclusion with just two laps left in the race, going all the way from tenth to second. Junior, who led four laps after starting in the two hole, welcomed the result, especially after last year's horrific season. He is hoping the good start can carry him through Fontana and Vegas, two places he has historically not performed well at.
Last season, Earnhardt Jr. produced a 39th and a 25th place finish in two runs the Auto Club Speedway. The lackluster results reduced his average finish at the track to a less than commendable 22.1. In 16 career runs at the facility, Earnhardt Jr. has no wins and just three top five (18.8 percent) and four top 10 finishes (25 percent).
Despite those relatively poor numbers, Earnhardt has little better feeling about today's race.
"I don't like going out west, but it's much easier after you run good somewhere else," he said.
Earnhardt will start this afternoon's race from the 28 spot, on the 14th row next to Juan Pablo Montoya.
