The third race of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series takes place Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Shelby 427 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is set to get underway at 4:30pm ET and it will be televised live on FOX. The Shelby 427: Kyle Busch vs Jeff Gordon NASCAR Matchup at Sportsbook.com is favoring Las Vegas native Kyle Busch to get the better of four time Cup Champion Jeff Gordon at -140 moneyline odds.
Jeff Gordon is off to a strong start this year after finishing 13th at Daytona and taking second place in last week's Auto Club 500. Gordon had a shot to win in California on Sunday but he did not have enough at the end to catch Matt Kenseth. Nevertheless, he still led 64 laps of the 250 lap race and drove himself into second place in the point standings. Gordon's 304 total has him 81 behind Kenseth and 10 ahead of the third place driver, Kurt Busch.
Jeff, who raced his first race back in November of 1992, has 11 career Cup races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He garnered a win at the facility in March of 2001 when he started in 24th place and led 33 laps. Last year he was not as fortunate, while he began the race in the fourth position, he concluded it with his number 24 DuPont Chevrolet in 35th. He does have five top 10 finishes at the speedway where his average placement is a mediocre 14.9.
Kyle Busch, who drives the number 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, is currently sitting at 18th in the point standings with a total of 215. He would most definitely be in the top 10 had it not been for his involvement in a wreck on lap 124 at Daytona. Busch led 88 laps of the Great AmericanRace before bowing out and he cruised to a third place finish in Fontana last Sunday night.
Busch has raced at Las Vegas Motor Speedway just five times, but he has recorded three top 10s and two top fives at the track. Last year he started at the pole in Vegas and led 56 laps of the race, however, he eventually faltered and went on to finish 11th.
