Shelby 427: Matt Kenseth vs Jimmie Johnson NASCAR Matchup

by Matt Foust on Saturday, February 28th, 2009

When the Shelby 427 gets underway on Sunday afternoon at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, it is safe to assume that no two drivers will have more attention on them than Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson. Fittingly, Sportsbook.com has the two Cup Champions paired against each other in their Shelby 427: Matt Kenseth vs Jimmie Johnson NASCAR Matchup.  Shelby 427: Matt Kenseth vs Jimmie Johnson NASCAR Matchup

The latest odds are favoring three time Sprint Cup winner Jimmie Johnson to finish ahead of Kenseth at -130 on the moneyline.

Matt Kenseth might be a hard man to go against this weekend as he has won the first two races of the season and has an 81 point led in the Cup standings. Kenseth, who captains the number 17 DeWalt Ford for Roush Fenway Racing, led just seven laps at Daytona but he got out front at the right time as rain ended the event on the 152nd lap. His performance at the Auto Club 500 was more dominant, Kenseth started 24th but led 84 laps on his way to victory lane.

The Cambridge, Wisconsin native is not afraid of the desert either. He has nine career outings at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, winning two (back-to-back in 2003 and 2004) while finishing in the top five four times (44.4 percent) and in the top 10 on five occasions (55.5 percent). Last year Kenseth led 70 laps at Vegas, but finished a distant 20th.

If their is anyone though, who can give Kenseth a run for his money, it is defending Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson. While he is currently 19th in the point standings as a result of his dismal showing at Daytona, he rebounded last week to finish in ninth place at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. He also had his Lowe's Chevy out front in the race for 74 laps.

Like Kenseth, Johnson has enjoyed great success (with the exception of the 2008 running) in Vegas. The California native is the active wins leader at the track with three (2005, 2006, 2007) and he has recorded three top fives (42.8 percent) and four top 10's (57 percent) in just seven runnings at the site. His average finish at the speedway is a stellar 9.3.

Matt Kenseth's Career Ratios:
Wins – 5.4 percent (18/330)
Top Fives – 26.9 percent (89/330)
Top Tens – 49.3 percent (163/330)

Jimmie Johnson's Career Ratios:
Wins – 15.5 percent (40/257)
Top Fives – 39.2 percent (101/257)
Top Tens – 61 percent (157/257)
