The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is in the desert today for some racing action at the one and a half mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 400 mile event is set to get started at 4:30pm ET and will be televised live on FOX. This year's Shelby 427, which is scheduled for 267 laps, features a starting front row of brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch. Odds To Win Shelby 427 at SBGglobal.com have drivers Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards listed as the favorites at +450 on the moneyline. Carl Edwards took the checkered flag in Las Vegas last year after leading 86 laps of the UAW-Dodge 400. He will be looking for a similar performance today in hopes of advancing past his current position of ninth in the points standings. This will be his fifth career race at the speedway, his average finish in his first four outings was a solid 11.7. He number 99 Roush Ford is starting today's race from the 16th position. Jimmie Johnson needs the win today even worse than Edwards as he is an uncharacteristic 19th in the Cup Standings. While Johnson did turn in a nice ninth place performance at the Auto Club 500 last week, his 31st showing at Daytona has knocked him back in the rankings. However, Johnson has to feel good about his chances in Vegas considering he is the active wins leader at the track with three trips to victory lane. In seven races at the facility, Johnson has driven his number 48 Lowe's Chevy to an average finish of 9.3. He starts today's running from the third position. Las Vegas native Kyle Busch is listed just behind Edwards and Johnson with +500 moneyline odds to win today's Shelby 427. Busch, after leading 88 laps at Daytona to open the Sprint Cup season, drove his way to a third place finish last week in Fontana, California. The performance landed him at 18th in the Cup standings with a total of 215 points. Today will mark his sixth running at Las Vegas Motor Speedway; he does not have a win at the track, but he has turned in two top five finishes. The number 18 M&M's Toyota will begin today's race in the second position. The fourth most favored driver to win the Shelby 427 is none other than four time Cup Champion Jeff Gordon. The man formerly known as the Rainbow Warrior is getting +700 moneyline odds to be the first to take the checkered flag. If Gordon is able to navigate his number 24 DuPont Chevrolet to the winner's circle, it will be his first Cup victory since October of 2007 when he won at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Jeff, who is second in the points standings with a tally of 304, has had reasonable success in Sin City. The California native has garnered five top 10 finishes and one win in 11 career races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He will start today's race in 28th. Current point standings leader Matt Kenseth is listed at +800 moneyline odds to win his third consecutive race. After grabbing his first Daytona 500 win, the Wisconsin native dominated the field in last Sunday's Auto Club 500. Kenseth started 24th in the race but but he impelled his number 17 Ford to the top spot after leading 84 of the 250 laps ran. He has to like his chances today too, despite starting from the 40th position; Kenseth has two wins and four top five finishes in nine runnings at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
