Defending Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson comes into Sunday's race with a great deal of momentum. Since finishin
g 35th at Daytona, Johnson has won back-to-back races, taking first place at the Auto Club 500 in Fontana and the Shelby American in Las Vegas.
Johnson led just 18 laps of last week's Vegas run, compared to Jeff Gordon's 219, but he was out front when it mattered most, giving him his 49th career Sprint Cup win. His stellar outing resulted in a move to fifth place in the points standings (12th going into last weekend's race), where he is just 63 points behind current leader Kevin Harvick.
Atlanta, like many of the tracks on the NASCAR circuit, has been kind to Johnson in the past. In 17 career races at the legendary speedway, the California native has recorded three wins (18 percent), nine top five (53 percent), and 11 top 10 finishes (65 percent). Last year, however, he did not perform as well in Atlanta, finishing a respectable ninth in the Kobalt Tools 500 and a distant 36th in the September Pep Boys 500 race.
