David Gilliland ran the #38 Ford at 186.320 mph to earn the No. 1 starting spot in biggest race on the NASCAR circuit. Gilliland won the pole at Talladega in the final restrictor-plate race of 2006 and was driving extremely fast in early practices at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.
Gilliland said, "Every time we've gone out, we've gotten faster and faster and faster and I think that's just a tribute to the Yates organization."
This will be the first time Gilliland will drive in the Daytona 500. Only Lee Petty, the winner of the first Daytona 500 in 1959, won the event in his first try.
Gilliland is jointed by fellow Robert Yates Racing teammate Ricky Rudd on the front row. Rudd was just 2/10th's behind for second place in the Daytona 500 pole position.
