Gordon, who grew up in the Indianapolis area, became a home town hero by winning the inaugural race and has since gone on to take the checkered flag a total of four times at the Brickyard. Jimmie Johnson, also of Hendrick Motorsports and winner of last years Brickyard event is expected to be a strong challenger to Gordon with a 5/1 odds chalk along with the 2005 Brickyard winner Tony Stewart installed with am 11/2 chance of winning. Stewart has some momentum coming off his victory in the previous NASCAR race at Chicagoland. Last season, Jimmie Johnson in the No.48 Lowes Chevy took the checkered flag ahead of Matt Kenseth as a caution flag flew... The win was his fourth of the season and 22nd of his Nextel Cup career. Johnson, who now totals 27 career titles, led three times for 33 laps. Pole sitter Jeff Burton led six times for a race-high 87 laps, but finished 15th. In 2005, Tony Stewart crossed the finish line 0.794 of a second ahead of Kasey Kahne for his 23rd Nextel Cup win. Stewart started from the 22nd position and took the lead for the first time on lap 100. Stewart traded Scott Wimmer and Kahne for the lead until lap 150, where he took over for good. Stewart led for a total of 44 laps, while pole sitter Elliott Sadler led for 39 laps, but finished 32nd. |
