Oddsmakers see Dale Earnhardt Jr a long shot in spite of pole start at PoconoIf you are looking for a long-shot NASCAR bet and don’t know where to put it then look no further. Oddsmakers at online sportsbook SBGGlobal.com are giving +2000 money line juice on Dale Earnhardt’s (Jr) chances of winning the Pennsylvania 500 Nextel Cup race at Pocono on Sunday. And the amazing thing is, Junior is starting from the pole position for the first time since 2002. Gamblers let me tell you, Earnhardt will be dialed in when that green flag drops. He was is great shape to win the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard last week but his engine in the No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet didn’t hold up sending him to the garage. With only six races left until the Chase for the Nextel Cup Championship begins, Dale needed some luck and got it with Friday’s qualifying run. Earnhardt missed the points chase in 2005 and doesn’t want to be on the outside looking in this year.

Currently Earnhardt is barely holding onto the No. 12 and last spot in the Nextel Cup standings with 2,217 points. Earnhardt is only 13 points ahead of Kurt Bush who is 13th in the standings. Any driver entering the final chase in 13th place or lower can finish no better than 13th. While his luck has not been good, a win here on Sunday could be the spark needed to get back into the points race.

Sinking like a rock in the standings is last years Nextel Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson . His season started out poorly when he got caught up in a wreck in the Daytona 500 and finished 39th. He then got on a roll, winning four of the next nine races. But then, over the last nine races, he has been able to record just one top-five finish. His average finish is 17th. During his last nine races, he has slipped from second to ninth in the points standings. In spite of Johnsons troubles, oddsmakers consider him a formable foe installing him with +700 odds to win the race.
