Kevin Keegan Named Newcastle Manager

by Alexander Banks on Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Fans of Newcastle United applauded the hiring of Kevin Keegan on Wednesday.  Keegan returns to Newcastle after an 11 year absence.  Keegan led Newcastle to Premier League promotion in 1993 and a third place finish the following season.  The Magpies finished 2nd to Manchester United in 1996 but that was not a highlight season for Keegan as his team blew a big lead.

Since Keegan left Newcastle the team has been led by Kenny Dalglish, Ruud Gullit, Bobby Robson, Graeme Souness, Glenn Roeder and Sam Allardyce,

It was Allardyce that was let go a week ago and the team was routed by Manchester United 6-0 on Saturday.  Newcastle has some talented players but has not played well this season.  They have Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Obafemi Martins, Damien Duff, Alan Smith, Nicky Butt, James Milner and Emre Belozoglu.

Keegan was head man at Fulham and took over the England head coaching job in 1999.  England lost in the first round of the 2000 European Championship under Keegan and then lost in a World Cup qualifier to Germany and Keegan left. Keegan spent four years in charge of Manchester City but left the team in 2005 after having little success.

Newcastle won the last of their four English league titles in 1927, while their most recent FA Cup championship was in 1955. Expectations are high at Newcastle with Keegan returning.  The team sits well back in the Premier League standings this season but hopes are high for the future.  There is already a new shirt being worn by fans around St. James’ Park.  It reads “King Kev.”
