Mario Gomez scored a hat trick for Stuttgart as they defeated Werder Bremen II to move into the quarterfinals of the German Cup on Wednesday. Gomez had been out of action since November but came back on Wednesday with a vengeance.
Also in German Cup action, Vfl Wolfsburg defeated Schalke 04 as the game went to penalty shots. Vfl Wolfsburg won 5-3 on penalties. Bundesliga title contenders Hamburg won easily over third division Rot-Weiss Essen as captain Rafael van der Vaart scored in the 3-0 win.
Arminia Bielefeld was upset in extra time by second division Carl Zeiss Jena. Czech midfielder Jan Simak scored on a penalty in the 116th minute to put Carl Zeiss Jena into the quarters.

On Tuesday Bayern Munich took care of Wuppertal by a 5-2 score to move into the quarterfinals. Germany striker Miroslav Klose scored twice in the first half for Bayern. Belgian defender Daniel van Buyten, Italian World Cup winner Luca Toni and Turkish midfielder Hamit Altintop also scored for Bayern.
Second-division 1860 Munich got a huge comeback win 3-2 against Alemannia Aachen. Second division Hoffenheim also got a 2-1 win against Bundesliga weakling Hansa Rostock.
Borussia Dortmund, 10th in the Bundesliga, hosted the top Werder Bremen team and got a 2-1 win. The hosts took the lead in the 19th minute when Giovanni Federico collected a pass from Mladen Petric and scored. Diego Klimowicz made it 2-0 after an excellent pass from Sebastian Kehl. It was Kehl that brought down Markus Rosenberg and Bremen scored on a penalty as Diego beat Ziegler. Rosenberg earned another penalty but this time Diego was not able to score and Bremen couldn’t get the tying goal.
