Chelsea FC was dealt a devastating blow during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter Finals when Fenerbahce SK beat them 2-1, at Sükrü Saraçoglu Stadium in Istanbul. Chelsea’s’ only goal came from Fenerbahce player Deivid, who redeemed himself with a goal in the second half. Kazim Kazim was the other Fenerbahce player to score after a 30 meter blast found the back of the net. For the third consecutive UEFA Champions League game, on Fenerbahce soil, the visitors first goal had come from a Fenerbahce player. Fenerbahce managed to control 51% of possession during the game, which only saw four shots hit the intended target. Their biggest challenge to date will be to hold off Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge, where they are 2-2 SU. Fenerbahce has not won on the road yet in CL play, they are 0-2-2 SU.Out of three possible outcomes, win loss or tie, two of them will get Fenerbahce through. They have the advantage as Chelsea needs three goals in order to qualify for the Semi-finals. Fenerbahce has not given up three goals on the road this season. They are a team with great power, speed and skill which makes for a highly skilled offense. Coach may opt for a defensive style game or come out strong in the first half and try to score, and then sit back on defense. Either way one goal for Fenerbahce would all but seal the deal. Chelsea suffered their first road loss in a fan crazed Sükrü Saraçoglu Stadium. Chelsea Manager, Avram Grant, thought his players played well. He stated “If you look at our display on the pitch, you can see that we should have won – my players performed very well. We were dominating the match in midfield and we couldn't see any danger coming but then they hit us with the second goal out of nowhere.” Deiter Drogba had a couple chances to score but none of his attempts found the back of the net. When it comes down to it, it’s the team with the most goals that counts, not how they played. Chelsea is 4-1-0 SU at home in EPL play and they are 2-2-0 SU in CL play. Chelsea FC vs Fenerbahce SK Kickoff: Tue, April 8, 2008 2:45 PM ET Line: Betway.com Pick: Chelsea 1.25 The Bottom Line: There’s no doubt in my mind that Chelsea will win, or tie, but their chances of scoring three goals against a great Fenerbahce goalie are slim to none. Chelsea has two games where they’ve scored over three goals, both against lower class teams in the EPL. Get your Chelsea vs Fenerbahce pick in now at Betway.com |
