They lost their most recent match over Chile 0-2 as they couldn’t hold first place from the Brazilians. Nelson Valdez leads his countrymen with four goals in World Cup qualifying. Paraguay beat Brazil 2-0 on June 15, 2008. Paraguay have always enjoyed a healthy reputation on the South American scene, thanks to their defensive solidity, superb aerial ability and plentiful supply of powerful front-runners. After reaching three of the first six FIFA World Cups, they went on to miss the next six in a row. In 2006 World Cup Germany their campaign fell spectacularly off the rails in the quarter-finals, suffering a humiliating 6-0 rout at the hands of Mexico. Even so, a FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign is a different matter altogether, and Martino's charges can confidently look back on 10 years of solid results as they prepare for the challenge ahead. Brazil is in top spot with 24pts and Paraguay nipping at their heels. They are 6W-6D-1L with 23 goals scored and five goals allowed. They recently beat Uruguay 4-0 thanks to goals from Daniel Alves, Juan, Luis Fabiano and Kaka. Although the win took Brazil top of the South American qualifying group, critics have complained that Dunga has taken Brazilian football away from its attacking roots. Former striker Tostao, for example, said today that Brazil had adopted Italian-style football. "That's why we say that talent is not enough. Talent is extremely important, but it has to be united with other things to have any effect. History shows this. "On a lot of occasions, Brazil have had players of very high quality, but haven't got the results," he said. "We have a duty to repeat our last performance, but we're going to need to have a lot of patience to win this game," said Dunga, whose team have found it more difficult to win at home than away. Luis Fabiano leads his countrymen with seven goals in World Cup qualifying. 2010 World Cup Qualifier: Brazil vs Paraguay When: Wed, June 10, 2009 5:00 PM ET Line: BetUS.com Pick: Brazil -325 Point-Spreads.com 2010 World Cup Qualifier: Brazil vs Paraguay The Bottom Line: Brazil have a deadly group of players who can score at will.
