The United States should go into its match versus England with some new found confidence. During the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup the United States appeared in their first ever international tournament final. The United States upset top ranked Spain, 2-0, to advance to the final. In the final against World No. 1 Brazil the United States took an early 2-0 lead through goals from Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan. Brazil scored 3 second half goals to beat the United States, 2-3, and win the cup.
The best the Americans have finished in the World Cup is third place in 1930.
A win over England would be huge for the American side but it probably won't happen and it really doesn't matter. Team USA should finish second out of Group C and advance to higher rounds. If the USA can get as much as a draw versus the English it would be a virtual win.
