Greece opened the tournament with a draw and a loss and many thought Greece would bow out of the competition after their final group stage game against Russia. However in his 120th appearance for his national team, Giorgos Karagounis fired his team into the lead of that pivotal game with a goal just before the halftime whistle. After the goal, Greece defended its lead for the entire second half and was able to emerge with the win and the runner-up position in Group A.
Unfortunately for the Greeks, Karagounis was booked late in the game for a dive that looked as though it should have been given as a penalty for Greece. Due to picking up a second yellow card, the Greek captain will not be available to play in the quarterfinal game against Germany.
Greece has only ever advanced into the quarterfinals of the European Championship once, in the 2004 tournament where they were crowned champions after a surprising run through the knockout stage.
Germany was the only team to advance from Group Stage with three wins. One goal victories over Portugal, Netherlands and Denmark earned them the maximum nine points and first place in Group B. In their third game, Germany dictated the pace and the action for the majority of the match and were never really challenged by Denmark. Advancement from the Group of Death was always expected to be hard but Germany was pegged as group favourites and are still expected to progress deep into Euro 2012.
Germany striker Mario Gomez is joint top scorer in the tournament along with Mario Mandzukic of Croatia and Alan Dzagoev of Russia, both of whom have already been eliminated.
Defender Jerome Boateng will be eligible to return to the line-up for Germany in the quarterfinals, after serving a suspension in the group finale against Denmark for picking up two yellow cards.
The Bottom Line: The Germans are loaded with talent and they’ve never lost this early in international footy. Want to dominate the books this season with some of the best EURO Picks Experts in the business? Then sign up right now and get EURO Picks Free!
