Two unlikely teams will face off in Sunday's Euro 2008 Finals. Germany, while widely regarded as a tournament favorite coming in, looked sluggish in the early going. Spain, meanwhile, is notorious for choking when the pressure grows too intense. Now, they will battle for a championship. BetOnline.com has Spain +120 odds, Germany +225 odds and the Draw +200 odds in the Euro 2008 Finals.
The Germans had another up-and-down performance in the semifinal, this time against Turkey. It was a wild affair, with a buschel of goals being scored in the game's closing minutes. Ugar Boral got things started with a Turkish goal in the 22nd minute, but Bastion Schweinsteiger answered for Germany four minutes later to knot the game at one apiece. Turkey proceeded to outplay Germany for most of the game. That didn't stop Germany from taking a late lead, when Miroslav Klose scored in the 79th. Turkey showed the poise it used to get to the semi, refusing to give up in the late stages. Semih Senturk got the equalizer in the 86th. The Turks' magic had right out, however. Philip Lahm capped a wacky, incredible match by scoring the winner in the 90th minute.
Spain, on the other hand, was absolutely dominant against Russia. The Russians held Spain at bay throughout the first 50 minutes, but a second-half explosion did them in. The Spanish got goals from Xavi Hernandez, Daniel Guiza and David Silva to earn a 3-0 rout. Cesc Fabregas played brilliantly, constantly tormenting the Russian defense with sharp footwork and excellent passes.
Not surprisingly, the Spanish are 120 favorites over Germany. They looked dominant against Russia and have looked in fine form for most of the tournament. Germany (+225) hasn't been so sharp and many observers would argue they're lucky to have made it this far considering the sloppy play. That said, we expect the Germans to bring their A-game and produce a wonderful match. But their A-game won't be good enough. Spain wins its first Euro Championship since 1964.
