by Scott Burgess on Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

It’s Uruguay vs Netherlands, Tuesday July 6, for a spot in the World Cup final. Uruguay was the last country to make the 32-team field and they’re alive and well in South Africa. Maybe not for long though, as the Dutch haven’t lost in two years. World Cup oddsmakers at BODOG.com have the Netherlands as -165 moneyline favorites over Uruguay (+550) with a DRAW at (+250). "Uruguay is a strong side and we will have to be very concentrated," Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk said. "They are fighters, survivors."

Uruguay had wins over South Korea 2-1 in the second round and Ghana 4-2 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in the quarter-finals. But as tough as they have been, the Uruguayans need the "hand of Suarez" to stay in the tournament. Their top striker Luis Suarez is out after he blocked a Ghana shot with his arm at the goal-line in the final seconds of extra time Friday. He drew a red card and is suspended for the semifinal. The young forward has three goals in the tournament. Captain Diego Lugano might not play because of a right knee injury. Fellow defender Diego Godin has a left hamstring problem, but Coach Tabarez would not discuss his lineup or those injuries Monday.

The Dutch striker Robin van Persie will play despite injuring his left elbow against Brazil. Dutch team spokeswoman Monique Kessels said Sunday the forward was cleared for action after a scan showed the injury was not as serious as first feared. Defender Joris Mathijsen is also fit to play, despite being a late withdrawal, against Brazil, because of a right knee injury. Wesley Sneijder bagged two goals for his squad and now lead the Dutch with four total at this tournament. Sneijder rates as an equally creative orchestrator of the Oranjes’ versatile forward line. The world already knew all about Sneijder’s flawless technique and visionary passing, but his lethal finishing has taken many people by surprise. The Dutch, who came into the World Cup with an impressive record, have won all five matches to extend their unbeaten streak to 24 games.
