Germany was beat by Spain 1-0 as their World Cup hopes died on the pitch. After demolishing Argentina 4-0 they looked like definite Cup contenders, but they were simply outplayed by the Spanish. Now, they look to save face with at least a third place finish. On a good note Germany can go home winners of something. Germany midfielder Thomas Muller is in the running to be voted the Hyundai Best Young Player at South Africa 2010 – but has admitted winning the FIFA World Cup would have been a better prize. Muller says his side must now win Saturday's third place play-off against Uruguay in Port Elizabeth to finish their tournament on a high. "I am delighted to be on that list, but winning the World Cup would have been a nicer reward," said the Bayern Munich midfielder. "I think we need a win to leave South Africa on a high." Muller scored four goals so far at South Africa 2010, including two against England in the Round of 16 and a header against Argentina in the quarter-final. But, Mueller was suspended for the defeat to Spain and will get his chance against Uruguay.
Uruguay can be happy to be where there are considering they were the last team to qualify for the World Cup, with no expectations of going far. Well they made the semi-finals but lost to the Netherlands 3-2. Oscar Tabarez insists Uruguay will be taking their match for third place against Germany very seriously. The La Celeste boss is adamant there will be no hang-over from their semi-final loss. "This is a very difficult game," he said. "Yes, fourth position is not the same as others, but we will go in with the same commitment and enthusiasm like we did in the encounter against Holland. We have no assurance that we will win, but we will prepare ourselves to fight to the death ." Tabarez also expected Germany to come out fighting in the game in Port Elizabeth. He continued: "At the moment, Germany and Uruguay have both secured fourth place by reaching the semi-final. But the challenge for Uruguay is to finish third in the World Cup. I know Germany and they will make it very difficult for us, so we must fight hard to win."
