MLS Review: MLS regular season the playoff race is heating up

MLS Playoff Race Update

With two months remaining in the MLS regular season the playoff race is heating up. Currently five Eastern Conference teams are in position to qualify for the MLS Playoffs which would mean a spot would be taken away from the Western Conference where only three teams would qualify. That can change in the final two months though, especially with teams like Los Angeles and Real Salt Lake having the most games left to play.

The two conference leaders, the New England Revolution and the Houston Dynamo, have played the most games in the MLS so far this season. Each of those two teams has just eight games left. Conversely, the Galaxy has 14 games remaining while Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA each have 12 games left to play.

Bet on New England Revolution at SBG GlobalThe MLS Playoffs have the top two teams from each conference qualifying. The next four teams with the highest point totals qualify as well, regardless of conference affiliation. New England has only 8 games remaining but has a solid six point lead over D.C. United and New York in the Eastern Conference. Houston and Dallas are the top two teams in the Western Conference and they are well clear of Chivas USA. The teams fighting for the playoffs at this point are Columbus who currently sits in the last playoff spot, Chicago who is 3 points back but has two games in hand, Colorado who is two points back, and Los Angeles. Toronto sits in last in the Eastern Conference and is probably too far back in the playoff chase since they have just 9 games left.

The interesting team is Los Angeles. They have 14 games remaining and although they sit 12 points out of the playoffs at the moment they have five games in hand on most of the teams above them in the standings. Real Salt Lake is in more serious trouble since they have two fewer points than Los Angeles and two fewer games in hand. At this point only Real Salt Lake and Toronto look out of the playoff chase.

Only six points separate the top five teams overall in the MLS standings so every game is very important as teams jockey for playoff positioning.
