The bookies at Bodog were rubbing their hands together with glee with the return of the Champions League seeing all three British teams failing to get off to a winning start. Point-Spreads.com reckons Rafa Benitez´s Liverpool will be by far the most satisfied after they hung on for an excellent 1-1 draw at Porto, despite conceding the opening goal and having to play the final half-hour with ten men after Jermaine Pennant was red carded for a second bookable offence. The Spanish manager will probably have seen the contest as Liverpool's toughest assignment of the first phase, a fact underlined by the fact that Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt all returned having been left out at Portsmouth last Saturday. With Kuyt equalising for the Reds with a close-range header, that was enough to see Benitez's side remain clear favourites to win Group A at 4-7. Marseille beat Besiktas 2-0 in the group's other match. Miserable Chelsea also drew 1-1, but Jose Mourinho will be nothing like as satisfied as Benitez after a very poor performance from his players. Incredibly, Chelsea were even outplayed by Rosenborg for periods in the first half, although they found their stride after Andrei Shevchenko's headed equaliser with the Ukrainian and strike partner Salomon Kalou both hitting the woodwork. Valencia got off to a great start when winning 1-0 at Schalke in the group's other match. After the Stamford Bridge result Chelsea may now find themselves in a battle with the German side for the second qualifying spot.
