Key Liverpool duo Daniel Agger and Xabi Alonso have both broken metatarsals on international duty and could be out for six weeks scans have revealed. As a consequence, Point-Spreads.com are monitoring the Premiership odds of Rafa Benitez´s side at SportsBetting.com which has Liverpool trading at 12 to 5 odds.Danish international Agger complained of soreness ahead of Tuesday's Champions League draw in Porto and so was rested on the bench. Spanish midfielder Alonso missed Saturday's draw at Portsmouth and the injury flared up in training and was omitted. Alonso’s midfield mastery since arriving at Anfield has played a huge part in their recent successes, not least the Champions League crown in 2005. Anfield spokesman Ian Cotton told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Neither player will require surgery but we expect them to be out of action for between four and six weeks. Xabi Alonso has suffered a stress fracture to the fourth metatarsal in his left foot and Daniel Agger has suffered a stress fracture to the second metatarsal in his right foot."
Agger and Alonso are expected to miss games against Birmingham, Everton, Tottenham, Arsenal and the Anfield European ties with Marseille and Besiktas. At least the Reds are at home for those Euro matches. Boss Benitez has cover for Alonso with Javier Mascherano and Mohamed Sissoko able to partner Steven Gerrard in midfield. Agger´s absence puts pressure on veteran defender Sami Hyypia, who deputised against Porto in the 1-1 draw in northern Portugal. Also in defence, Jamie Carragher has only just recovered from a cracked rib, but young reserve Jack Hobbs is receiving rave reviews but has zero senior experience. Full back Alvaro Arbeloa may be called on to play in central defence if required. Online sportsbook SportsBetting.com has posted European Football betting odds to win the English Premiership: Arsenal: 9 – 2 Chelsea: 11 – 5 Everton: 300 – 1 Liverpool: 12 – 5 Manchester City: 300 – 1 Manchester United: 2 – 1 Newcastle United: 250 – 1 Tottenham Hotspur: 200 - 1 |
