Steve Bruce off to Wigan

by Alexander Banks on Monday, November 19th, 2007

Bruce off to WiganBirmingham's directorial hierarchy have cleared the path for manager Steve Bruce to join Wigan. Co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold gave the Latics permission to talk to Bruce after he stated he was keen to move to the JJB Stadium following the uncertainty surrounding the Midlands club.

Both Wigan and Birmingham have a battle on their hands to stay in the English Premiership. Sources close to the board indicate Sullivan, Gold and managing director Karren Brady feel they have a moral obligation to at least allow Bruce to talk to Wigan owner Dave Whelan.

The trio are fully aware that Bruce's future is in the balance after prospective new owner Carson Yeung refused to approve the new contract he had agreed with Sullivan and Gold nearly half a year ago.

It is believed a compensation package of around £3million for the remaining 19 months of Bruce's contract will be paid by Wigan. However, the exit of Bruce's lieutenant Eric Black needs to be resolved as Birmingham want experienced operator at the helm until they find a replacement for Bruce.

Sullivan and Gold are expected to take a hard-line stance to Yeung´s takeover since the Hong Kong businessman said he wanted to extend beyond the December 20 deadline set to take control of the club.

Yeung purchased a 29.9% stake for £15 million in July but is now asking for more time to raise the additional £35 to £40 million needed to buy out Sullivan and Gold.

It could ultimately mean Sullivan and Gold will scrap the proposed deal sooner than later.
Otherwise things will drag on into the New Year.

The duo are fully conscious that more uncertainty – which has already contributed to them losing Bruce's services – could further damage the club's hopes of surviving in the Barclays Premier League.
