Big Sam Allardyce not for England

by Alexander Banks on Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Big Sam not for EnglandSam Allardyce says he has no intention to succeed Steve McClaren as England boss.

Newcastle United are 22/1 with Bodog to win the FA Cup.

The 53-year-old Newcastle manager nearly landed the job after Sven-Goran Eriksson's departure but he distanced himself from the role after McClaren's exit.

He said: "I am contracted to Newcastle United and from my point of view, that contract needs to be honoured."

Allardyce has been quoted by sportsbooks for the job but he is something of a long shot. He was allowed to put his name forward by Bolton  last year when the Football Association were looking for the manager but maintains he is not in the same position this time around.

He said: "I am not in a position like I was at my old club where the chairman openly extended the invitation for me to go for the position. I am not in that position now."

Asked if he was ruling himself out, Allardyce replied: "Yes."

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp says he would be interested but doubts he will be up for selection by the FA to succeed McClaren.

Redknapp is very underrated and has performed admirably in two spells at Fratton Park. First he led them into the Premier League and then established them in the top flight.

Redknapp told the British sports media: "Anybody would love to manage the country, sure, but I wouldn't see it coming my way to be truthful. It's all ifs and buts.

"All I am worried about is going to Birmingham on Saturday and getting three points."
