Start defending - says RamosJuande Ramos has told his defence they need to smarten up their act if Tottenham are to improve as a side.

Spurs are listed at 1.40 to beat Birmingham on Sunday.

Spurs moved to within touching distance of the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Aalborg. The north Londoners had to come from two goals behind to salvage victory against a side considered to be greatly inferior in terms of resources and playing ability.

"The most important thing in the team is balance - and we are imbalanced," he said. "We are conceding too many opportunities and we have to find a solution to this, because we are not going to score three goals in every game. We have to stop the defence leaking goals."

The Spaniard brought on striker Darren Bent at half time who scored the winner. Before that Dimitar Berbatov and Steed Malbranque had got Spurs back on level terms.

Said Ramos of his defence: "It is an area we need to work on," said the head coach. "We are making mistakes that could be costly."

Spurs have some quality defenders on the treatment table. Tottenham skipper Ledley King has been out all season with knee surgery, while defenders Ricardo Rocha and Anthony Gardner have also been sidelined.

Against Aalborg Younes Kaboul was out with a groin strain and marauding full-back Pascal Chimbonda was shifted to the centre of defence.

"Unfortunately a lot of the injured players we have at the moment are in the same area of the team - we have King, Gardner, Rocha out," added Ramos.

"The team is going to suffer as a result. We have to use the best players possible for each game, but that's difficult when a lot of them are injured."
