Bolton v Middlesbrough Preview

by Thomas Jensen on Friday, January 19th, 2007

Bolton v Middlesbrough PreviewThe Bolton Wanderers will head to the north east England to face Middlesbrough F.C. The Trotters, as they are known, are hoping to come away with the points necessary to challenge Arsenal’s 4th spot in the English Premiership by beating the Smoggies at their Riverside Stadium this Saturday at 10 a.m. EST. A win would tie Liverpool at 43 points leaving behind Arsenal if Chelsea could beat the Reds.

WagerWeb.com has the Trotters at +160 with the Draw at +220. The home side has great value as well at +140. Both sides have an interesting price. The total over 2½ goals +125 is a great option against the under laying -154

The Smogs came away with a solid victory over Charlton Athletic last Saturday when they sank 3 against Athletic’s one goal by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who opened up the scoring in the 26th minute. Middlesbrough would not be denied and 18 year old Lee Cattermole evened the sides one minute before the halftime marking his first in the EPL.

In the second half the Smoggies took over and earned a win by conquering the mid field to their advantage. This possession in the half field proved effective enough to score them two more to seal the deal. Ex Sunderland Argentine Julio Arca scored at 63 minutes regulation and Nigerian Yakubu Aiyegbeni finished off with a goal, marking his tenth, four minutes after Arca. Middlesbrough also played this week for the FA Cup against Hull City. The tiring match against a 21st spot in the English Championship was won by an unconvincing one goal margin in a 4-3 final.

The Trotters played Manchester City last Saturday at home in Reebok Stadium. After 90 minutes of regulation time the score was a boring nil draw. Windy conditions did not help a match that lacked quality from both sides either.

Stand in Bolton Captain Gary Speed told his teammates they have "got to improve" before Saturday's Premiership clash with Middlesbrough. The midfielder, who has taken over the skipper's armband while Kevin Nolan is injured, felt Wanderers' performance in the goalless draw with Manchester City was not good enough.

He told the club's official website: "We couldn't get the tempo going to put Manchester City under pressure. We knew before the game they were hurting after we beat them at the City of Manchester Stadium, so it was always going to be difficult. But we've got to improve when we go to Middlesbrough on Saturday."

I like the Trotters for this one based on their one weeks rest. Bolton at +160 is the pick for me. I’d also suggest a wager on the draw at +220. If tired Middles run out of gas early, Bolton could gain from it. The total to go over 2½ +125 is also a great pick.
