Denmark will be hosting Sweden in Copenhagen and will mark the first time the Scandinavian countries have been paired up in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier.
Denmark is now a destination of choice for Swedish footballers abandoning Allsvenskan clubs for the more lucrative Superligaen. This adds to the rivalry that has been forged over the past 97 match ups between the countries.
2:00 PM EST – Qualification Group F – Denmark v. Sweden
Up until the start of qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008, Denmark had appeared in all twelve UEFA European Football Championship qualifying competitions, and had played 109 matches. In that time, they won 44, drawn 25 and lost 40 of those fixtures with 164 goals scored and 151 conceded. Before starting their UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying round campaign, Denmark (109) lie second only to Spain (110) in terms of the most fixtures played by a single country in the history of the competition. Denmark’s first match was played on 23 September 1959 when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Czechoslovakia in Copenhagen in the first leg of their 1960 UEFA European Football Championship eighth-finals tie. The Danes would end up on the losing side following Czechoslovakia’s 5-1 victory in the return leg.
If Sweden can win, Denmark would be in serious trouble trying to avoid missing out on the EURO 2008 finals for the first time since 1980. Up until the start of UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying Sweden had played 81 matches in the UEFA European Championship with 36 wins, 22 draws and 23 losses, 117 goals scored and 82 conceded. Sweden have recorded four 5-0 victories in the competition, but their highest winning margin came on 7 June 2003 when they defeated San Marino 6-0 in Serravalle with Mattias Jonson scoring a hat-trick.
