English Premiership Preview: Tottenham v Newcastle

by Thomas Jensen on Saturday, January 13th, 2007

The 7th place Tottenham Hotspur looks to advance this Sunday in the English Premier ChartThe 7th place Tottenham Hotspur looks to advance this Sunday in the English Premier chart, against 11th place Newcastle United. They will also seek to avenge a 1-3 defeat from The Geordies at their home St. John’s Park last December 23rd. Kick off is 10 am EST.

Newcastle will pay visit this time around, when they go on the road to play at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane in Haringey, North East London. Tottenham is a -137 favorite at WagerWeb.com with a Newcastle dog at +333 and a +225 draw line.

Hotspur Manager Martin Jol has admitted the next three weeks will be a stern test of his squad's strength but he says it shows Spurs are on target this term. Spurs could face a schedule of seven games in 22 days providing they defeat Cardiff in next week's FA Cup third round replay. After that they will almost be ready to start the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup.

They will also face rivals Arsenal in a two legged Carling Cup semi final, and Jol hopes to have captain Ledley King back from a bruised foot for the first clash on January 24. With King ruled out of the Barclays Premiership clash against Newcastle, Calum Davenport is again set to partner with Michael Dawson in central defense.

Jol has identified the pace of Kieron Dyer and Obafemi Martins as a threat. This was demonstrated when Newcastle defeated Spurs at St James' Park last month. Jol feels his side can cope without King, who has missed the last three games.

"We played Martins in pre-season against Inter Milan. Davenport played and did well," said Jol. "They've got the pace with Dyer and Martins but I can't ask Ledley King to come on with his Lamborghini on the pitch and try to stay with them."

Meanwhile, Jol has signed young duo Ben Alnwick and Adel Taarabt this month but does not anticipate much further movement in the January transfer window.

This game is a calculated risk to wager on the +333 dog Newcastle. The draw line at +225 is also a tempting wager. I would try for a double up and hope -137 Tottenham loses at home.
