Liverpool closing in on Ajax winger Ryan BabelRumours are rife that Liverpool have made a £10m bid for highly-rated Ajax winger Ryan Babel. Liverpool is 9 to 2 odds to win the English Premiership with Bodog.com.

The Dutch club are holding out for £13.5m for the 20-year-old and it is reported that Arsenal are keen on the youngster. Ryan Babel's agent told Sportweek magazine: "Liverpool have made a bid for Ryan but he hasn't spoken with them. We can only speak when Ajax say the clubs have an agreement, and phase two can start, but it's not that far yet."

Babel caught the eye in the Under-21 European Championship as a star for Holland in their success and was named man of the match in 4-1 win over Serbia in the final. Babel scored Holland's second goal in the final with a classy finish. However, he also missed a penalty as well as other opportunities.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez signed striker Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid last week and admitted he was looking to sign wide players. Babel made 27 appearances for Ajax last season, netting five goals.

Sunderland will complete the £3m signing of Southampton defender Chris Baird. Saints turned down a bid from Fulham for the 25-year-old but have accepted Sunderland's offer.
