Liverpool v Chelsea Preview

by Thomas Jensen on Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Liverpool v Chelsea PreviewAnfield, home to the Liverpool Reds, will be the scene for a struggle to gain points between two of the English Premier League’s top flight teams. Chelsea makes a road run to preserve their second spot while Liverpool F. C. wants to improve and obtain points to move closer to the second position and bump Chelsea out. Kick off is this Saturday, January 20th at 7:45 a.m. EST.

This game has great value for the soccer punter. With no clear favorite there are great prices on all sides. The Reds are +163 with a +200 draw.  The Chelsea Blues are a great pick at +150. WagerWeb.com also has a 2½ goal total with an over of +115 and an under at -143.

Liverpool took to the road last week and pinned a 3-0 win against Watford, with scores by Bellamy at 33 minutes and Crouch with a deuce, one scored at 39 and another at 47 minutes. The Blues also had a win last Saturday against a weak Wigan Athletic at home at Stamford Bridge in Fullham, West London. Bet on Soccer at WagerWeb.com and receive a 30% cash bonus!

First Chelsea started by disarming Wigan’s offense and then by completely annihilating their defense. They struck more then a dozen times and netted 4. Frank Lampard sank the first goal with barely 12 minutes on the clock. Once the second half started it was evident there was more to come. Dutch winger Arjen Robben drifted one past the keeper at 62 minutes and Chelsea then forced an own goal by Wigan’s keeper Chris Kirkland. Later Didier Drogba's made his 21st of the season at the last minute of regulation.

Manager Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his wish to strengthen Chelsea's central defense, which has been left badly exposed by the injury suffered by John Terry and the summer sales of William Gallas and Robert Huth. Tal Ben Haim the Israel centre half, who is out of contract in the summer, has long been linked with a move to the Blues with Mourinho, a known admirer but it seems the deal went sour.

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce is prepared to sell Ben Haim if a suitable deal could be struck, but following talks between the two clubs, Chelsea has announced that they won't be signing him now.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is also set to drop out of the hunt for another back up player. Blackburn full-back Lucas Neill is an Australian who ponders a move to West Ham. Neill, whose contract expires at Ewood Park in the summer, is believed to be considering an offer from the Hammers worth a much larger wage packet than Liverpool is prepared to offer.

Neill's representatives are reportedly demanding £30,000 a week for the player, but Benitez insists he will look elsewhere if a decision is not made soon by the Australian international

I like Chelsea for this game at +150 and would even chance the double with a +200 draw, hoping that Liverpool doesn’t pull off the home stinker. The total over is also a great pick, both teams have the man power to score.
