Sevilla v Villareal Preview

by Thomas Jensen on Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Sevilla v Villareal PreviewLa Liga’s 11th place Villareal will host league leading Sevilla at their Estadio El Madrigal this Saturday at 4 p.m. EST. Villareal is coming from a rickety win over 16th place Atletico de Bilbao, while Sevilla suffered their fifth defeat of the season last weekend after going down 2-1 at home against lowly 15th place Mallorca.

The good news for Sevilla was that neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid were able to make the most of the Andalusian side's loss, and they remain leaders of the pack, for the time being at least.

Sevilla is presented as the favorite with a +137 comeback while Villareal gets back +160. The Draw line is +220 which seems like a good shot. On the total of over 2½, the pay out is +105, while the under is a favorite -125.

Despite the setback, Sevilla’s Coach Juan de Ramos was able to take plenty of positives from his side's performance. "Without a doubt the best thing for me has been the way we have pushed to try and get something out of the game," he said "This is the most important thing, the great attitude that the players have." But back at home this weekend, when they took on Real Mallorca, they were looking to make it nine league wins out of nine at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan this season. They have failed to achieve that goal.

Sevilla needs a victory this weekend to remain front runner atop the Spanish league standings. The leaders haven't won in 2007, allowing Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Athletic Madrid and Zaragoza to move closer as the season reaches its halfway stage.

Only seven points now separate the top six sides, making Spain the closest fought of Europe's top soccer leagues. Sevilla is first with 37 points from 18 games, two points more than Barcelona and Madrid, although Barcelona has played a game less. Valencia has 33; Atletico has 32 and Zaragoza 30.

Sevilla, which lost a perfect home record this season against lowly Mallorca last weekend, aims to stem a run of two league defeats when it visits Villarreal on Saturday.

Sevilla midfielder Christian Poulsen denied his team is buckling under the pressure of heading the league. "The leadership isn't weighing us down. This is the best league in the world and any team can beat you," Poulsen said.

I like Sevilla for this game. They have a need to win or else they will be caught by others below them on the chart. I suggest taking the draw as well and hoping Villareal doesn’t spoil it. I can also see a few scores made in this game which would be a great win for either side. Sevilla and the over is my pick.
