After signing 31 year old David Beckham to a reported US$ 250 million 5 year contract, the LA Galaxy squad has encountered an array of open criticism and praise. But much like a typical Los Angeles resident, the team’s rubbing elbows with Tinsel town may have caught on to some crazy marketing ploys.
It’s no secret that the MLS is a great institution struggling to capture the heart of America. We are pretty much used to contact Football, a beautiful sport by far but not the most popular sport in the world. Throwing the ball and setting up blocks for the run are not played, watched or bet on as heavily as the spotted round ball version. You can’t use your hands and that sounds unnatural to most folk, period.
But Major League Soccer, is catching on, and will spread like fire in a large metropolis like Los Angeles and its variety of races, creeds and colors. All of which have heritage going back to the round football. Now with its Ambassador of great soccer, the Galaxy can only obtain that specifically, a Galaxy of fans flocking to the stadium to see David Beckham, the first marketing move in this big scheme. Now Galaxy has announced that starting February 10th and for $130 players will be given the opportunity to earn a spot on the squad alongside Beckham. The trials, which will be overseen by Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop, will be held at the Galaxy's home stadium in Carson with select players advancing to the second round the following day.
This could be the beginning of something very large. A reality show theme even. Some no name walks in off the street and becomes David Beckham’s running mate. What better way to establish the American Dream for John Doe and Becks? In spite that it seems a funny way to attract attention, I like it.

Another recent move was the creation of the SuperLiga, which will pit 4 MLS sides against 4 top Mexican Soccer teams. The exposure for MLS and Mexican Soccer will be huge although it overcasts the CCC (Concacaf Champions Cup) which will be relegated to a secondary tourney that will just add more games to MLS and Mexican Teams.
The MLS is a great league that has grown through hard work and has at the same time given way to a great American National side. With the hiring of recent Euro stars and the influx of Latin players and others from around the world with this tryout scheme, the MLS promises to capture our attention and entertain us for a good buck while at the same time preparing to conquer the World Cup, someday.
