Andy Murray played his first tennis match since November of 2009 on Sunday night, but he had little trouble dispatching 
South African Kevin Anderson in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. Murray recorded nine aces and 37 winners in beating Anderson, and he had 19 unforced errors compared to 32 by the Johannesburg native.
The 22 year old Murray, who has 14 career singles titles, has never been eliminated in the second round of a major. He has reached the fourth round two times in four Australian Open appearances, including last year when he lost to Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. Murray's best finish at a Grand Slam came at the 2008 U.S. Open where he lost 2-6, 5-7, 2-6 in the final to Roger Federer.
Marc Gicquel advanced to the second round of play after a difficult opener against Italian Simone Bolelli. Gicquel won the match in straight sets but he needed tie breaks in the first two sets before eventually prevailing 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3), 6-3. The victory was the fourth match win of the season for the 32 year old Gicquel, who played in tournaments at Auckland and Brisbane earlier this month.
Murray and Gicquel have met on one other occasion, that being last year at Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Murray took the first set 7-6 (2), but lost the second 4-6; he was declared the victory after leading the third set 3-0 when Gicquel retired.
