Aussie native Lleyton Hewitt, who is playing in his 14th Australian Open, advanced to the second round of play after beating
Ricardo Hocevar 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 on Monday. Hewitt hammered 10 aces and 33 winners against the Brazilian to improved to 2-1 on the year.
Hewitt, who won the U.S. Open in 2001 and Wimbledon in 2002, is playing in his 45th major. The 28 year old had his best finish at Melbourne in 2005 when he lost in the final to Russian Marat Safin. He lost in the first round of last year's tournament, something he had not done since 2002.
American Donald Young, who is presently ranked 195th in men's singles, made it past the first round of a Grand Slam for just the second time in nine attempts after besting Belgium national Christophe Rochus 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 on Monday. The 20 year old Young had just 12 unforced errors in the four set match and he was 4-of-6 on break point conversions.
The left-handed Young, who has a career match record of 10-37, is playing in just his second Australian Open. German Michael Berrer ousted him in the first round of the 2008 event.
