Nikolay Davydenko remained undefeated for the year by beating German Dieter Kindlmann in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 on
Monday. The first round win came on the heels of the Russian's championship run at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha where he defeated both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Davydenko had six aces and 39 winners (12 from Kindlmann) in the easy victory.
The 28 year old Davydenko, who is vying for his first Grand Slam win, has reached the quarterfinals in three of his last four Australian Opens. He was eliminated in the fourth round in 2008 and he did not play in last year's event.
Twenty-two year old Illya Marchenko, fresh off a stellar run through the Australian Open qualifying rounds, scored a first round 7-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Spaniard Carlos Maya on Monday to garner a meeting with Davydenko.
Marchenko, who is ranked 119th in men's singles by the ATP, is playing in his first ever Grand Slam; he has a career match record of 6-5.
