Serena Williams put herself in position to win her 12th major, beating Na Li of China 7-6, 7-6 in the semifinals on Thursday
. Williams had 12 aces and 33 winners in the hard fought match and won a remarkable 86 percent of the time on her first serve. The 28 year old also had 24 unforced errors to Li's 38 in securing her fifth Australian Open finals appearance.
Williams, who won the women's double title with her sister Venus late last night, has won the Australian Open four times, including a straight sets 6-0, 6-3 victory over Dinara Safina in last year's final.
Justine Henin's continued her quest for a second Aussie Open crown (won the title back in 2004) by destroying Jie Zheng 6-1, 6-0 on Thursday. Henin, who has won every match in straight sets with the exception of a third round match against Alisha Kleybanova and a fourth round meeting with Yanina Wickmayer, had 23 winners to Zheng's three and she won 84 percent of the time on her first serve in the semifinals beatdown.
Henin, who retired in May of 2008, will be seeking her eighth Grand Slam title when she meets Serena tomorrow. The 27 year old has four French Open titles and two U.S. Open crowns to go with her one Australian Open victory.
Tomorrow will mark the 14th meeting between Williams and Henin. Serena, who has won four of their last five matches, has a 7-6 head-to-head record against the Belgium native. However, Henin is 4-2 in their six Grand Slam meetings, beating Williams twice at the French Open, once at Wimbledon, and once at the U.S. Open. They have never played against each other at the Australian Open.
