Andy Roddick, who is presently eighth in the ATP men's singles rankings, comes into his first round match with a 26-4
record this year. Roddick last played at the Masters 1000 in Miami, where he took out Tomas Berdych 7-5, 6-4 in the final. The title was the second of the year for the Nebraska native as he won on the hardcourts at Brisbane prior to the Australian Open in January.
The clay courts at Roland Garros have never brought out the best in Roddick, but he did show well there last year. The always outspoken player made it to the fourth round at the 2009 French Open before losing to Gael Monfils in straight sets 4-6, 2-6, 3-6. Roddick's previous best at the French came in his debut in 2001 when he made it to the third round.
Twenty-eight year old Jarkko Nieminen will be playing in his seventh French Open when he meets Roddick tomorrow morning. Nieminen did not participate in the tournament last year, but he made it to the third round of the event in both 2008 and 2007. His best showing at Roland Garros came in 2003 when he reached the fourth round.
Nieminen, who is ranked 69th in men's singles, has played in 16 events this year, but his record is a pedestrian 9-11. His best performance of the season came on the clay at Morocco where he beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
Roddick and Nieminen, who both turned pro in 2000, have never played each other before.
