The French Open has been less than kind to American Andy Roddick over the years, and the two continued their 
contentious relationship on Tuesday. Roddick eventually prevailed in his first round meeting with Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, but it took him five sets and then some to do it as he won 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).
The 27 year old, who has been eliminated in the first round four times in eight trips to Paris, committed 29 unforced errors in the match. Roddick overcame his miscues, though, with 19 aces and 52 winners in the marathon outing to improve his match record to 27-4 on the year.
Twenty-three year old Blaz Kavcic, who is playing in just his second Grand Slam, defeated Argentina's Eduardo Schwank 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 4-0 to advance to the second round in his maiden voyage at Roland Garros.
Kavcic had 32 unforced errors and six double faults against Schwank, but he also hit 42 winners and won six of his 11 break point conversions (Schwank 3-of-11).
