Novak Djokovic extended his winning streak to 39-0 on the year after he beat Victor Hanescu on Wednesday to set up a third-round clash against Juan Martin del Potro at Roland Garros. Second seed Djokovic hit 14 winners and committed six unforced errors to win the first set 6-4 against Hanescu. He won 87% of points on his first serve in the 6-1 second set, before Hanescu requested treatment for a left thigh strain. The Romanian played five games in the third set to lead 3-2, before conceding the pair's sixth meeting due to injury. The duo had also met in the third round last year. Djokovic is looking to become the first player since Jim Courier in 1992 to win the Australian Open and Roland Garros in the same year. Djokovic has a 3-0 record over del Potro and they last meet in May 2009 at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome. Djokovic's overall winning streak dating back to the Davis Cup final in December is now 41 matches, tied-fourth in the all-time list. He has won seven titles this season.
Juan Martin del Potro defeated Ivo Karlovic in 4 sets(6-7 6-3 7-5 6-4) and in the second round he defeated Kavčič of Slovenia 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Del Potro played in 2011 Estoril Open, which appeared to be Del Potro's first tournament on clay since he lost the 2009 Roland Garros semi-final to the eventual champion Roger Federer. In Estoril, he defeated Fernando Verdasco 6–2 6–2 in the final. In his road to the final, Del Potro defeated the No.1 seeded Robin Soderling 6–4 7–5 and dropped just one set in his five matches, there. After suffering an 8-millimeter tear in his left rectus, Del Potro withdrew from Madrid and did not participate in Rome Masters. Del Potro's best surfaces are hard and clay. Del Potro captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2009 US Open defeating Roger Federer in the final, and Nadal in the semifinal, becoming the first and only man ever (as of Jan 2011) to beat both Federer and Nadal in the same Grand Slam tournament. He became the second Argentine and the fifth youngest man to win the US Open title in the Open Era.
