Frenando Verdasco will be looking to make his third consecutive trip to the fourth round of the French Open when he takes on fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro tomorrow morning. Verdasco improved his record this year to 23-8 by beating Florent Serra of France 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round and German Philipp Petzschner 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.
Verdasco, who is ranked eighth in the world, employed a deadly accurate serve in the opening rounds (76.5 percent of his first serves landed in play) to quickly dispatch his opponents. The native of Madrid, Spain made it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open back in January, but he does not have any Grand Slam titles on his record.
Nicolas Almagro, who was ranked as high as 11th in the world in July of last year, had more trouble reaching the third round than did Verdasco. He worked through his opening round foe, Argentian Aqustin Calleri, with ease, winning 6-4, 6-1, 6-3, but had more difficulty with Ernests Gulbis in the second round. He ended up beating the Latvian in four sets 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Almagro had 26 aces in the first two rounds of play to just two double faults. He is enters tomorrow's match with a 13-10 year to date record.
Verdasco and Alamagro are set to play at 5:00am ET on Friday, May 29th on Court 1.
